Greetings from Cambodia D-Lab students in the field

Greetings from Cambodia D-Lab students in the field D-Lab is an interdisciplinary program at MIT committed to working with people around the world to create and disseminate affordable technologies. This January, teams comprising a total of 35 students are working in Cambodia, Zambia, India, Ghana, Honduras, and Brazil. Janet Li (Urban Planning) 12 is blogging from Cambodia, where the D-Lab team is working together with farmers and credit union members to build composting bins and a low-cost biodigester under the guidance of an expert in the community. The team is also gathering feedback on solar lantern technologies from 18 households without electricity in Kien Svay, developing and teaching creativity-building educational modules at a youth shelter in Phnom Penh, and learning from rehabilitative organizations about local needs and the potential for the Leveraged Freedom Wheelchair (LFC) to be used in Cambodia. Greetings from Kampong Thom! It has been a jam-packed couple of days as always. It seems crazy that we will soon be out of Cambodia Heng just jetted off to Switzerland yesterday, Nabeela is heading back to Massachusetts tomorrow, and the rest of us have less than week left. We have been traveling for the past few days we were in Siem Reap for a little over 48 hours and are currently spending the night in Kampong Thom to do some work with our community partner FLIFLY at an affiliated office here. Heres a glimpse of what weve been up to since our last update. Technology Evaluation: During our time in the Kien Svay province with FLIFLY last week, we completed another two rounds of interviews as part of the D-Lab Technology Evaluation program for solar lanterns. Working in teams, we collected back the solar lanterns we had distributed to nine rural households without electricity and redistributed them to another nine, conducting interviews about the families light usage along the way. Together with FLIFLY, we decided upon a fair, randomized lottery to determine which nine families would be able to keep the technology at the end of our field trials. Compost bin support: Following our successful composting workshop last week, which we are reproducing in Kampong Thom, several farmers expressed the desire to create compost bins of their own. Our team, including Alice, Carolina, Sara, and Kofi, continued to work on the design of the bin and later discovered the brilliant innovation of the farmers themselves, who utilized local materials to recreate their own highly effective compost bins. It was a great example of how the villagers learned from us, and how we also learned from them. Meetings with local organizations: We continued to meet with organizations with whom we could potentially form partnerships for long-term work in Cambodia. These included the Center for Childrens Happiness (an orphanage and school for children who were previously garbage pickers the kids were bright and very affectionate), Geres (Groupe Energies Renouvelables, Environnement et Solidarits, which works on large-scale environmental projects including cooking stoves, green charcoal, and forestry), Hagar (a rehabilitation center for victimized women, which also works on prevention education), Advanced Engineering Consultants (a consulting firm that also conducts educational workshops to introduce children to engineering), and Naga Biofuels (a biodiesel manufacturing plant that started as a way to supply energy to the Visitor Center of the Angkor Hospital for Children, which Alices architecture firm designed). Dinner with Hengs family: To thank Hengs family for everything they did for us, including helping us get our apartment in Phnom Penh, housing Kofi, and stuffing us full on more than several occasions, we took them out to a hot pot restaurant on Friday night. The food was delicious, and it was lovely to spend more time with them all. We also underwent a photo session to commemorate the night. Fun with trash: At our third session at at A New Day Cambodia, the team of Cabrina, Carolina, Jessica, and Janet, along with students from ITC (Institute of Technology of Cambodia) and Harpswell, taught the kids about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We then asked them to build boats out of materials that other people had thrown away, with the purpose of transporting as many oranges as possible across a tub of water. As always, we were blown away by the childrens creativity and cleverness. Angkor Wat: Yesterday, as a break from our work, we took a whirlwind tour through the breathtakingly beautiful and sacred temples of Angkor Wat. We arrived before 6am to drink iced coffee and see the sunrise, and spent the next 12 hours exploring the worlds largest religious complex. Built in the 12th century as the heart of the capital city, some temples were more in ruins than others; some had the roots of enormous trees wrapped around their walls; most still had their Buddhist and Hindu stone carvings preserved. It was an architectural wonder, and we all took photos until there was no space left on our cameras and smartphones. When we succeeded in avoiding the large crowds of tourists, visiting the temples was truly a spiritual experience. The week ahead (our last one!) is short, but we still have much to accomplish before we leave Cambodia. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades. Mainly this happens because the student†s attendance comes up. There is also a change in grades because it is easier to focus when everyone looks alike. Another reason school uniforms should be required in public schools is that it causes less violence. There will be less peer pressure toward competition to distract the students from their studies. Everyone will be equal if the uniforms were to be required. The weapons factor will be cut down drastically by mandatory uniforms. The reason for this violence decrease is that weapons will be harder to conceal. If the weapons are harder to conceal, there will be less attempts to hide the weapons and fewer will be brought to our school or school functions. This brings about a change for the better, because it reduces social classes. Cost is another reason that school uniforms should be required in public schools. Critics complain that this policy is too costly; uniforms are actually more affordable. There are fewer clothes to buy because everyone will be dressed in similar clothing. There is no competition between peers to outdo each other. There are also ways to help low-income families with the cost. With community support for low-income families, in the form of donations, clothing vouchers, and support from the business partners of the communities, this problem can be overcome. The great number of thrift stores and uniform supply houses also reduce the cost for the clothing. These things combined can make it far less costly to purchase standard clothing than to meet the demand for designer clothing worn now. Chosen by each school, uniforms can provide students with a school identity. It can also strengthen school and individual spirit and pride. This is achieved in much the same way as an athletic team uniform builds team unity. The joining together by all students will also raise the morale and self-esteem of students. Students that are together in one mind lead to a school that is united. There are a lot of things to consider when making your decisions on how you feel about mandatory school uniforms. No one should jump to any conclusions without being fully informed. After gathering information on the pros and cons of the issue, then each person should think long and hard on the benefits of wearing school uniforms. Worry Doll free essay sample

I stood, relaxed, at the cash register imagining the kinds of people that were bracing for the cold November night just outside. I was volunteering at Worldly Goods and everything was very peaceful. Worldly Goods is a local nonprofit store that sells hand crafted items from developing nations. The craftsmen get fair trade for their goods, so I usually feel like volunteering there is time well spent. A few people were there but none dared talk louder than â€Å"French Cafe† that was playing sweetly in the background. I liked to imagine that we had to be quiet or else the dark Tuesday-night winds would realize we were safe and sound inside and come after us. I had less than an hour left of my shift so my mind slowly wandered back to the numerous headaches that were waiting for me at home. None of my work seemed doable, and I could already imagine myself sitting at my desk wishing I was as calm and put together as I assumed I looked to the customers at Worldly Goods: just your av erage girl with enough free time to volunteer. I was just trying to remember if I had ever thought about the life of any cashier I had ever seen when the door opened and a new family stepped in. It was a woman, a man, and two very young girls, all of whom were bundled up, with bright red cheeks. I welcomed the parents while the young girls ran in, already searching for a new toy or two. They certainly didn’t fear the November winds as their cheery voices bounced along with them while they began searching for an angel to put on top of their Christmas-tree. When the older of the two girls hugged an angel ornament to her heart, claiming it smelled like cinnamon, I suddenly wished that I could stop anything bad from ever happening to her. The little family bobbed admiringly around the many treasures, the parents pointing out fancy Spanish teapots and Turkish mirrors to each other, while the little ones would be excited by toy llamas and little model men on bikes that would pedal when pushed. I didn’t want to seem nosy , but when the mother stopped and began talking to her young girls about a toy that I, too, have memories of, I listened carefully to what she had to say. â€Å"The idea of a worry-doll is that right before you go to bed, as soon you can feel your mind drifting away, you whisper to your doll everything that is upsetting you and troubling your mind. Once you’ve admitted your worries, you place her under your pillow, and then, while you sleep, she will take the burden of worrying from you so that your mind can be free and relaxed. She may even whisper some wisdom to you through your dreams.† The mother told her girls that she used to have dolls like those when she was little, and that if they wanted, she would buy each of them one of their own. The little girls were delighted with the idea of the doll, but I found it obvious that it was the mother who wanted one the most. Over the next few minutes she kept coming back to them, and continued mentioning them to the girls, to keep them interested, I imagine. She looked down at the little string and wood doll with a look of recognition and appreciation that I’m sure came straight from her childhood. I wondered what worries she whispered to her doll when she was little, and what they would be if she had one to whisper to now. I wanted to walk up to her just then and tell her that a worry doll isn’t just for children, that the doll would never think she was too old, and that she would listen, and carry her worries for her just the same as when she was younger. When the little family left, they bought one cinnamo n angel, and three worry dolls. I imagine the little girls just ended up playing with theirs, making them go on adventures with their other toys, and creating all sorts of exceptional stories, which is itself a way of letting go of worries. The mother, however, at least I hope, got the third doll for herself, to keep under her own pillow at night. Though this sweet, cheerful family was, in a way, a distraction for me from my own issues, they also reminded me that everyone has worries. Everyone feels insecure, stressed, and doubtful sometimes, and that’s ok. What is important is that you have a way of dealing with those feelings and that you are able to persevere in spite of what you feel is holding you back, and that’s why we have worry dolls. It wasn’t until nearly a month later that I truly realized this. It was a Saturday-morning and I was back in Worldly Goods, just stopping by to shop this time. Like usual, my mind was clouded by all of the things I expected myself to complete that day, going over and over again everything that had to be finished, and that I didn’t know how to do, It was when I looked down and saw the basket of worry dolls that I realized what I was really doing. I wasn’t coming up with a plan for getting things done, I was telling myself I wouldn’t be able to, filling myself with panic and insecurities when I should have been boosting myself up and deciding what to do. I immediately thought back to the day I saw a mother look at these same dolls and decide that she wasn’t going to worry anymore. That’s what the dolls are, they represent letting go of what you can let go of, and calmly dealing with those worries you have no choice but to face. It’s imp ossible not to worry sometimes, but when I left Worldly Goods with a new worry doll, I made the choice not to let my worries consume me.

There are seven TQM tools defined as Check sheets, Scatter Diagram, Cause and effect diagrams, Pareto Charts, flow charts, Histograms and Statistical process control (SPC). (Heizer Render, 2008,p.204) Conclusion Toyota lacks several Deming principles and six sigma implementation steps in its program Toyota way. There is no education and training program for the employees. Also, there is no communication strategy within the various sub division of the organization. There is no program to remove the barrier and to provide openness in the work environment. The company principle lacks behind in providing any vigorous education program to bring change in form of quality improvement. Toyota way principle has also not catered fully all the aspects of six sigma component in their guiding principle. Recommendation Based on the analysis of TQM and Six Sigma concept Toyota needs to bring some major strategic changes in there processes to handle the quality defects and recall issues. Toyota needs to revise its Toyota Way program to focus more on the quality management. Although, its process and product whose standardization effect the performance. But, after this analysis it can be recommended that it is people who run those processes and they also need to give special attention for the standardization service to bring quality in product. Toyota has already undertaken the need for quality process, but it should also bring knowledge propagation, education and training for employees to bring consistency and quality in their work. The controls and performance measurement program should be made more vigorous to meet the customer expectation and gain the competitive edge as before Toyota has. The knowledge and training of TQM tools and other education program to increase the quality performance of Toyota product should be provided to employees on regular basis. The other issues related to quality improvement can be resolved by increasing the frequency of communication and company strategic philosophy in different geographical regions around the world. The company has already taken crucial steps to handle this problem by executing these three major steps. First, Toyota has unleashed the program Toyota way which consists of its core-value and respect for people principles. Toyota has also announced to provide massive training program around the world in various production facilities. In the last effort Toyota has emphasized on the facilitation of knowledge transfer and learning across its all sub division. Music Through the Centuries Essay

The period between 1400 and 1600 is called the Renaissance period. Also known as the period of rebirth, this period brought out the inventions that made a great impact on the lives of people up to the present. The critical and ambitious minds of inventors allow the invention of clock, gunpowder and eyeglasses. Consequently, certain aspects of music also changed. Polyphonic and imitation among voices became rampant. The vocals, whose main purpose is to bring forth emotion and meaning in music, were greatly utilized and some pieces of church songs were intended for a capella performance. With these, the Renaissnce period acquired the name Golden Age of A Capella Music. The impact on music was so vast that families for musical instruments develop. Harmony gained significant attention to the composers who favored blending over contrasting. At the same time, texture became richer because bass was registered for the first time. Some of the famous composers in this era included Josquin Des Prez and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. If given the chance to choose a musical composition in this period, I will choose the Ave Maria by Josquin Des Prez. The song is very relaxing and soothing. It has a great combination of overlapping and alternating high and low notes. Vocals are good and an atmosphere of peace and lightness is exemplified as one listens to this music. After the Renaissance comes the Baroque period (1600-1750), which is characterized by splendid, glamorous and lavish effects on arts, science and music. The canopy of the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica was constructed and a number of natural laws were found such as the laws of pressure by Robert Boyle. Modes, which were rampant during the Renaissance and Medieval period, were replaced with major and minor tonalities. Basso continuo was greatly accepted and used, as well as the doctrine of affection, which allows the composers to express their feelings freely in music. Composers during this period realized that counterpoint, free use of dissonance, imitative polyphony and homophobic method are essential in their field of artistry. They showed emphasis on volume, texture and pace in music and frequent usage of basic triads and inversions. At the same time, the composers began to explore the inner ability of music to express human spirits and to depict natural phenomena. Opera also flourished because of the Italian’s desire to recapture the Greek drama where music played an important part. Solo vocalists and the style of homophony were utilzed to help the listeners focus on the melody of the song. Orchestra also began to take shape as string intruments such as violin became dominant. Famous composers that popularized this grandiose style of music included Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldo, and George Frideric Handel. To name one of the great muscial compositions in this era, I would prefer Cantata 80 of Bach. This song is festive-like with good transition of high notes and low notes. The song brings a warm and welcoming aura. This song expresses a high level of emotion as well as a great evidence of how good and hard it is to compose a piece of music. After the Baroque period comes the Classical period (1750-1825). During this period, the first edition of Encyclopedia Brittancia was released. The first vaccination was made and the electric battery was invented by Volta. Compared to Baroque music, Classical music has less complicated texture but has far more variety and contrast because of the use of words such as pitch, tempo, mood, and timbre. Melody is shorter than the Baroque music but with clear-cut phrases and cadences. Functional harmony was retained but tended to focus on slow rhytmic harmony. Metric pulses were present but were not emphasized. Moreover, occasional pauses and rhythmic set points were also common. On the other hand, the orchestra continued to develop with an additional section for the woodwind instruments. The same with the opera wherein piano is considered the most inportant intrument in every performance. Great importance was given on instrumental music, and sonata form was the most important design in this period. Using these styles of music, several composers became known during this period such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. The Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart is an adorable and explicitly unique music. Listening to this music, one can feel the notes freely moving across the music sheet. It has charming and rich melodies that made this music a classical favorite not only in the past but also in the present. The joyful, skipping melody made this music enjoyable and light to hear. Classical period was succeeded by the Romantic period (1825-1900), also known as the Age of Sentimentality. It is during this time that telephone, light bulb, and radio transmissions were developed. In terms of music, there was a simultaneous development of musical extremes. Although basso continuo was totally abandoned, chromaticism flourished and textures were more developed. The virtuosity of the composers were enhanced and they put emphasis on beauty, elegance, and balance in their compostitions. Music became lyrical with dramatic contrasts in dynamics and pitch. Because this was the period for freedom of design and form, music became thematical. Programme music developed and the idea of nationalism flourished because of the need to break away from the strong influence of Germany on music. Fryderyk Franciskez Chopin and Franz Schubert were some of the famous composers in this period. The song of Erlking by Schubert is a good example of romantic music. This song is great because it is very enticing and one can feel the energy flowing through the entire piece. The continuous pulsation of notes gives this song a playful genre. It can be compared to prancing horses that can give one this feeling of excitement and curiosity. With the Classical Music declining, Modern Music became the reigning music in the 1900s. Some of the events that totally changed the history of the world are World War I and II as well as the Vietnam War. This change had a great effect on how music was viewed during this period. Modern Music focused on treating variety, continuity, and mood. Noise makers such as sirens and typewriters as well as percussion instruments became a vital part in this industry (Thinkquest, 1999). The aim to build an unusual music resulted to the employment of tongue fluttering and other special techniques. When they are volatile, inhalation of these vapors may cause irritation in the respiratory track and the vapors may cause irritation to the eyes even. CNS Depression CNS depression is defined as the consistent effect of these solvents at sufficiently high levels of exposure. The symptoms are disorientation, giddiness, and euphoria. The syndrome may progress to paralysis, convulsions and unconsciousness. Death may ensue. The mechanism is not clear yet but the observation that narcosis (CNS Depression) was related to the solubility of toluene and Xylene in lipid and not at all related to their chemical structure, and hence suggested that narcosis resulted from CNS cell dysfunction following solubilizing of the solvents in the cell membrane. Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Jean Piaget was born on August9, 1896, in the French speaking part of Switzerland. At an early age he developed an interest in biology, and by the time he had graduated from high school he had already published a number of papers. After marrying in 1923, he had three children, whom he studied from infancy. Piaget is best known for organizing cognitive development into a series of stages- the levels of development corresponding too infancy, childhood, and adolescence. These four stages are labeled the Sensorimotor stage, which occurs from birth to age two, (children experience through their senses), the Preoporational stage, which occurs from ages two to six, (motor†¦show more content†¦I remember as a child thinking that the sun and moon followed me as I took a walk. In addition, the child’s use of language is not as sophisticated as it might seem. Children have a tendency to confuse words with the objects they represent. If a child calls a to y block a â€Å"car† and I use it to make a â€Å"house†, the child may become upset. To children, the name of an object is as much a part of the object as it’s size, shape, and color. To the Preoperational child, insulting words may really hurt. (Coon 107). Consider my preschooler calling each other â€Å"baby†. To the adult it is an innocent word, but to the preschooler it is the worst thing they can think of.nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Piaget’s description of the Preoperational stage also focused on all the other things the preschool-aged child still cannot do. According to Piaget, egocentrism is a cognitive state in which the child sees the world only from his own perspective, without awareness that there are other perspectives. (Bee and Boyd 155). The child is not being selfish; rather, she simply assumes that everyone sees the world as she does. I see many examples of ego egocentrism on a daily basis in the preschool environment and at home. For example, my daughter, Meryl, who is almost five years old, gets a phone call from her aunt. She begins asking Meryl questions.
